TH-73 Mixed-Reality Meets Automated ATC

Recently, Frasca International delivered a number of ground-based TH-73A Thrasher Part-Task Trainer (PTT) devices to Chief of Naval Air Training (CNATRA) and Training Wing 5 at NAS Whiting Field, FL. These new mixed-reality (MR) helicopter simulators follow the industry trend of using certain aspects of virtual-reality technology alongside physical controls to provide effective flight training at an affordable cost.

Intended to be used in self-paced, student-directed training, the TH-73A PTTs were developed mainly for learning cockpit procedures. Then Frasca added a couple of new technologies to elevate these devices to the next level. They adopted TakeFlight Interactive's AIVIator software to act as a virtual instructor guiding students through their flight training curriculum. They also added ASTi's SERA^® automated ATC environment to boost the realism of the virtual space.

Together, these technologies take the devices from low-cost MR procedures training to valuable resources for student pilots to undertake supplemental practical flight training between the airfield and practice areas in the simulated world. SERA provides air traffic control services for VFR and IFR flight training without the need for human role-players. It's an easy way to automate pilot training while adding realism and fidelity to ultimately increase the value of low-cost training initiatives.
