Of course, SERA can provide its realistic air traffic control environment to any flight training program. In this case, SERA's innate capabilities provide valuable civilian ATC training for military pilots. It's just as important for them to learn FAA standard phraseology as it is for commercial pilots. But the mix of civilian and military aircraft and procedures in shared airspace presents a unique challenge when it comes to ATC.
This spurred ASTi to expand SERA's automated ATC capabilities and add new features aimed directly at aerial refueling procedures. We added the aerial refueling tracks and waypoints over the continental U.S. to SERA's database for routing. We also gave SERA the ability to handle handoffs from virtual ATC center controllers to pilot trainees for MARSA* refueling operations. After refueling, pilots relinquish ATC responsibilities to SERA which then issues appropriate flight plans for all the aircraft involved.
These changes are further proof of ASTi's ability to deliver a market-driven solution at a schedule and cost that benefits the customer and has an immediate positive impact on the quality of their training.
