Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division (NAWCTSD) and various contract prime integrators selected ASTi’s Telestra product line to meet the challenging comms and aural cue requirements across the Navy Aviation Simulation Master Plan (NASMP).

Mature and capable product

USN needed a cost-efficient implementation that would meet war fighting performance standards through the use of available technology.

Telestra products ship from stock and provide a field-proven runtime environment alongside its Studio development tools; together they offer full-fidelity communications and immersive aural cue solutions to meet any simulation requirements.

Powerful development environment

The simulated communications system operations shall be constrained by real-world limitations, such as:

  • Ranging, line-of-sight, transmit power, terrain, radio type (HF, VHF, SATCOM, etc.)

Telestra's Studio development environment includes ready-to-use radio objects which accommodate all of these considerations. It allows users to build, test, refine, and deploy communications and sound models in real-time to achieve maximum realism.

Software modeling library

Program required immersive, high-fidelity aural cues.

  • Level D-equivalent sounds for own-ship: engine, rotor, APU, afterburner, landing gear, weapons, weather, etc.
  • External sounds: explosions, wingman slipstream, in-air refueling, etc.

Telestra Studio offers more than 100 different components for modeling sound for anything from a simple tone to a full, Level D quality engine to a Link-16 or other tactical data link enabled radio.

Flexible host interface

Comms equipment shall be replicated and operate within the tolerances of the actual airborne equipment:

  • Radio type (e.g., ARC-210)
  • Crypto gear (e.g., KY-58)
  • Anti-jam (e.g., MIDS, HQII)

Telestra accepts inputs based on trainer requirements; network and hardware I/O work together with a custom interface control document (ICD) unique to the application. Control sources may include host computers, hardware panels, touchscreens, and real aircraft equipment.

The Telestra comms model can be tuned appropriately for each type and combination of comms equipment in the simulation.

Interoperability

The system must have standards-based support for previous, current and next-generation NASMP Federation Agreements Document (FAD)/Federation Object Model (FOM) and High Level Architecture (HLA) requirements, as well as NASMP interoperability and integration into the Navy Continuous Training Environment (NCTE), Fleet Synthetic Training (FST), and USAF Distributed Mission Operations (DMO), etc. networks.

Telestra has been tested and certified for deployment on NASMP HLA, NCTE FST Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS), and other networks across all branches of the military.

Information Assurance (IA) compliance

Maintain ongoing compliance with stringent DoD cybersecurity certification and accreditation processes (like DIACAP ATO and RMF).

ASTi offers an ongoing IA maintenance program or one-time system IA hardening procedure for customers to apply into a simulator's accreditation boundary. Both approaches relieve on-site technical staff of difficult and time-consuming IA chores.

Product lifecycle sustainment

Planned fifteen-year life cycle; maintain form, fit and function.

ASTi conducts sustainment-related activities as part of our continuous product lifecycle management process. Over the lifetime of a product ASTi identifies and mitigates issues related to:

  • Software, OS and hardware migration, availability, and obsolescence. For example, some F/A-18 trainers started with ASTi's DOS-based DACS systems 20 years ago, and are still operational, although today they run Red Hat-based Telestra software and latest-generation i7 hardware.
  • Standards updates within NASMP HLA and NCTE DIS networks. ASTi is actively involved with the Simulation Interoperability Standards Organization (SISO), NASMP, NCTE, Combat Air Forces Distributed Mission Operations (CAF DMO) and other working groups.
